New Shiitake Logs!

I started the day feeling thoroughly disabled by the bitterly cold weather we are having, but eventually made it outside. On checking the mail I found that the new shiitake mushroom plugs arrived, and since the logs have been sitting for about five weeks I wanted to get them inoculated ASAP.

I didn’t have anything set up, so I ran to Goodwill for candles and the hardware store for a drillbit and stop ring. I have drill bits but I wanted a nice sharp one to reduce the workload in this weather. I didn’t have a set of stop rings for drill bits.

The spawn plugs are from Field and Forest Products. I got 1000, which I was worried about having enough of to do 30 logs, but it seems to be working great. I got about ten logs drilled, implanted, waxed over, and stacked  tonight. I’ll get the rest done tomorrow and put up a post with photos.
